3/18/24 Student Update

Hello Cambridge College Students,

One of the big reasons that I have chosen to spend my career in education is that I love learning new things. It sounds trite, but it is also true. Here’s an example: Friday, March 15th marked the “Ides of March,” which, according to superstition, is a day to worry about. The origin of this comes from the Shakespeare play Julius Caesar, in which a soothsayer tells Caesar to “Beware the Ides of March.” According to historical legend, “Caesar, the Roman general and dictator, received a similar message on March 15, 44 B.C. He did not take the warning to heart and was assassinated by a group of senators” (Goodwin, 2024). What I didn’t know is that the word “Ides” comes from Latin, meaning “to divide,” and the 15th of every month marks the Ides! If you want to know more, this article on the Almanac website has other interesting facts about the Ides of March.
